What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the traditional medicine of India, thought by many to be the oldest system of healing in the world.

It literally translates to “the science of life,” and it emphasizes prevention, balance, and living in rhythm with nature. Rather than just treating symptoms, Ayurveda considers the whole person and their whole lifestyle when assessing health and making recommendations.

At Kur, we use Ayurvedic principles to personalize spa services—from the temperature of your oils to the direction of massage strokes. Our Ayurvedic-inspired services include:

Understanding your dosha

In Ayurveda, each person is made up of three energies (doshas) that govern how the body and mind function.

Ayurveda stresses an individualized approach to health and wellness that starts with an understanding of your own dosha. Click on the dosha/energy below to learn more.

  • This body type is associated with air and space. Vata is light, cool, and dry in nature, and it governs all movement in the mind and body, including blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing, and the movement of thoughts. Vata predominant individuals tend to be thin, talk and think quickly, and always seem to be doing a million things. When Vata is in balance, it’s a great source of creativity and vitality. However, when out of balance, this dosha can lead to digestive issues like gas, bloating, constipation, insomnia, fear and anxiety.

  • This body type is associated with fire and water. Pitta controls the metabolic functions in the body, including digestion, absorption of foods and nutrients, and body temperature. It also digests all information and experiences. Pitta types are hot and sharp. They tend to have a medium build, a fair complexion and excel in things with a competitive edge, from sports to politics. They also tend to be leaders, attracting people via their confidence and determination. When in balance, Pitta encourages strong digestion, achievement and intelligence. When Pitta is out of balance, it can lead to irritation, inflammation, heartburn, acid reflux, loose stools, anger and ‘burn out.’

  • This body type is associated with water and earth. Kapha supplies moisture and nourishment to the entire body, including the skin and organs. Kapha individuals tend to be heavy and strong, both in mind and build. They tend to favor stability over change. This dosha is also associated with a forgiving, loving attitude and personality - these individuals are often the “glue” that holds things together. When out of balance, Kapha can propagate sluggish digestion, excess weight, mucus congestion, grogginess, depression and lethargy. It can lead individuals toward insecurity and envy, while also preventing them from enacting change.

Take a moment to reflect on these qualities and how they relate to your own life and personality.

We each have all three doshas in us, but in different proportions. Each dosha carries its own qualities—both when balanced and when out of balance. Because everyone’s makeup is unique, understanding your dominant dosha not only helps us tailor your spa experience, it can also guide you in how to eat, sleep, move, and live in ways that support harmony and well-being.
